Shark Attack on South Padre Island Injures Four During Fourth of July Holiday

(LLP) — A rare and alarming shark attack occurred on South Padre Island during the Fourth of July holiday, leaving four beachgoers injured. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised concerns about beach safety.

The attack took place on Thursday morning, when a shark bit two individuals and injured two others who encountered the predator⁴. The victims were enjoying the holiday festivities when the shark struck, causing panic among beachgoers.

One of the victims, a man, suffered a severe bite to his leg and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for further treatment⁴. Another victim, a woman, was also hospitalized but is reported to be in stable condition⁵. The other two individuals sustained minor injuries while fending off the shark⁵.

Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene as beachgoers rushed to help the injured. Two off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agents were among the first responders, pulling one of the victims from the water and applying a tourniquet to his leg⁶. Their quick actions likely prevented further complications.

Local authorities, including the South Padre Island Police Department, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard, responded swiftly to the incident. They deployed drones, boats, and helicopters to monitor the area and ensure the shark was no longer a threat⁴.

Shark attacks are extremely rare in Texas, and officials emphasized that this was an unusual occurrence.

"This is a very rare event on our beaches”, "We will continue to monitor the area and ensure the safety of our visitors". - said South Padre Island Fire Chief Jim Pigg.

The victims' families have launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover medical expenses, which has already exceeded its donation goal in less than 24 hours². The community has rallied around the victims, offering support and well-wishes for their recovery.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging beachgoers to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines while enjoying the water. Despite the scare, officials assure the public that South Padre Island remains a safe destination for tourists and locals alike.
